Game-Changing Tips for Building Your Business

Who doesn’t want to grow their business? It’s hard in any event, but especially if you work as a solo entrepreneur, which many of us in the business do. You wonder if you’re doing all you can to grow your business, and if you’re doing it ‘right’.

Whether you’re launching an image career, or re-imagining your existing business model, it is a huge commitment of time, energy and money that requires the ability to wear many hats. Well, help is on the way!

The Chapter is hosting a webinar designed to offer image industry members the opportunity to learn from the success, and trials, of accomplished industry peers. The moderated webinar will feature a panel of industry leaders who will share what they’ve learned along the way as they built their uniquely successful businesses.

Shortcuts & Solutions to Start Your Year Right

As image professionals we work mostly alone in our businesses, and we share common problems. But we don’t always have the resources to solve those problems on our own. That’s why Shortcuts & Solutions is such a popular program – and our first one is scheduled for next week:

Shortcuts & Solutions Teleconference
Friday, January 22, 2016

Our moderator will be Brenda Kinsel AICI CIP and we will discuss the following topics:
*Staying motivated – how do you stay motivated with the new goals you set for the year? Is it time to give up or make adjustments to goals you’ve already had but feel stuck about? How do you get reenergized?
*What are some of your favorite organizational tips? How do you keep your notes organized? Calendar? Follow-ups? To-do’s? Filing?
*How are you filling your marketing calendar with opportunities for people to turn into clients, i.e. presentations, seminars.  What are your favorite topics?
First Friday notes
You’ll have pages of useful notes!
You’ll be asked to turn in your thoughts on the above topics a few days before the event (even if you don’t have anything to offer on one of the subjects, that’s okay.) The content will be summarized and provided back to you before the call to make it easier to take notes.
If you turn in the homework, you get the summary. And if you can’t personally be on the call, you’ll get the link to the recorded call afterwards. But of course, the more people on the call, the better. SO much information is exchanged – you’ll want to be on the call if at all possible!

Great Fashion Trend Talk at FGI Video Viewing

Even while the temperatures soared outside, Chapter members enjoyed an afternoon together in Mountain View talking Fall fashion trends. The Fashion Group International (FGI) video was comprehensive in its explanation of the key trends of the season. Fortunately everyone received the 8-page handout provided by FGI, which was a big help in taking notes on the trends and for reference later.

Members got the opportunity to put their knowledge into practice, by dressing two imaginary clients in Fall trends that suited their lifestyle, personality and personal traits. Of course, chatting over lunch was an added benefit.

If you missed this event, be sure to watch your email for notice on when the Spring 2016 video will be shown (sometime after the first of the year.)

FGI Fall Trends Video & Trend Talk

Back by popular demand, we will be showing the Fashion Group International (FGI) Fall Trends video on September 10.  We’ll listen to their professional analysis of the Fall trends and then have a discussion about what we’re seeing in the stores and how we’re translating that for our clients. This is a great way to get some clarity on the trends and share thoughts with your fellow image consultant professionals. Hope to see you there!

We Went Green With Style

Forget about green with envy…we went green with style at the 2015 Installation event on June 23. Chapter members and guests enjoyed socializing and snacks (and yes, champagne), as well as checking out the great gift bags from Bloomingdale’s (thanks to Board member, Carolyn Rovner, for putting the goodie bags together.)

Out-going President, Elena Daciuk, thanked her Board for their hard work during the year, as well as the membership for supporting our events and Education Conference.  In particular, she recognized Board members Marjory DeRoeck and Carolyn Woodworth for serving 12 years as Co-VP’s of our fabulous Education Conference. (Marj and Carolyn were also recognized earlier this year at our Education Conference; watch a short video here.) Thanks Marj and Carolyn for your dedication through the years!

Members going off the Board, with thanks for their service, are: Marjory DeRoeck, AICI CIP, Carrie LaShell, AICI FLC, Carolyn Rovner, AICI FLC, and Carolyn Woodworth, AICI FLC.

The new Board was then officially installed by Marj, and 2015-2016 President, Danean Gallaher, presented Out-going President, Elena Daciuk, with a thank-you for all her hard work during the year, followed by sharing with us her thoughts about and goals for the coming year.  With all of our help and participation, it should be a great year ahead!

Danean thanksBoardNew Board members for 2015-2016 are: Co-VP’s Education Conference – Connie Bozant and Carol Parker Walsh; Secretary – Wendy Shindler. Thanks, ladies, for stepping forward and volunteering to help lead our Chapter!  The full 2015-2016 Board listing, along with contact information, can be found here.

We enjoyed hearing from our delightful guest speaker, Madison McClintock, about how she takes unwanted, discarded or damaged clothing and accessories and turns them back into things of beauty. Madison brought a rack of clothing she has repurposed and described her thought and design process for how she reimagined some of the items. Members of the audience presented their ‘problem’ items and Madison gave some very interesting ideas as to how she would rework them. We’re all looking forward to seeing the finished products! If you have items needing ‘rescue’, you can reach Madison here.

MadisonThanks to all who came and enjoyed the evening, and a special thanks to Installation event Chairman Carrie LaShell for organizing the evening for us. We’re looking forward to a wonderful new year for our Chapter!

Go Green with Your Colleagues

We know that ‘green’ fashion is a hot topic these days. Fast fashion is under fire, and certainly we, as image professionals, are dealing with the effects of the ‘oversupplied’ closet on a regular basis. Since one of the solutions we encourage for our clients is disposing of those items that no longer serve them well, we’re especially looking forward to the upcoming program at our Installation event on June 23.

Installation bannerMadison Jo McClintock, CEO of MJM Artwear, will show us her “reawesomization” process – turning what might have been a discarded or ‘unusable’ item into something fresh and revitalized. AND…attendees will be asked to bring an item they would to get “reawesomized” and hear first-hand how Madison would do it.

MJMArtwear_Before&After_1MJM Artwear is a culmination of everything Madison has learned not only about art but also about life and the world. By taking all of her creative talent and passion and applying it to reusing and recycling items, she developed MJM Artwear. MJM Artwear is more than a clothing line and more than a clothing brand…it is a new way to see beauty in all things. That nothing is trash and that everything can grow and be made into something more extraordinary than it was before. MJM Artwear includes custom silkscreened clothing of all kinds for women and men, custom hand painted shoes, hats, bags and soon, accessories.

MJMArtwear_Before&After_5Bring a friend or two (along with your items that need some re-awesomization) and enjoy an evening of food, wine and education on how you can go green with style. We’ll also install our fabulous 2015 Board of Directors when we’re through playing with fashion.

Join Us for Some High Style Fun

One of our most popular outings for the Chapter is when we schedule our private docent-led tours, and this is one you won’t want to miss. We’ll be having some high style fun at the Brooklyn Museum Costume Collection at the Legion of Honor in San Francisco on April 22.

Costume Museum

“Explore the glamour and sophistication of one of the world’s preeminent costume collections, whose fashions worn by American women reflect the nation’s tastes and transformations over the course of the 20th century. High Style, presented exclusively on the West Coast at the Legion of Honor, provides a rare opportunity to view the evolution of fashion from 1910 to 1980 through more than 60 stunning costumes, 30 costume accessories, and an array of related fashion sketches from the Brooklyn Museum Costume Collection.”

We’ll meet promptly at 2:45 p.m. to take our private tour, followed by social time together for those who can stay.  Come join in the fun – register here and bring a friend!

Tracking the Spring Trends

It’s one of the favorite events in our Chapter – talking the trends. We’ll be showing (one time only!) the excellent video prepared by New York’s Fashion Group International (FGI) on Spring Trends 2015 and then digesting and adding our own commentary and analysis to what we’ve just seen. You won’t want to miss this opportunity to join in the conversation.
